LANSING - After completing his second trip there in as many years in office, Governor Rick Snyder said he expects the growing economy in China will mean business opportunities for Michigan. Snyder and officials from 21 Michigan businesses spent 10-days in China visiting a variety of communities and meeting with government and business officials there. A highlight of the trip was opening of the Michigan China Center in Shanghai, which had been a casualty of budget cuts in previous years. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation also now has economic cooperation agreements with Guizhou and Sichuan provinces. Officials on the trip were looking for a variety of opportunities to export Michigan goods, both manufactured and agricultural. Agriculture and Rural Development Director Jamie Clover Adams said the trip showed some significant opportunities to sell Michigan farm goods. "In the globally interconnected world of today, China offers extraordinary opportunities for Michigan companies to grow," Snyder said of the trip. "The 21 Michigan businesses that participated in the trade mission found potential new markets, distributorships and other business partnerships. The Chinese companies and government officials we met with are eager to seek greater cooperation with Michigan." In addition to the larger meetings with the entire contingent, MEDC officials said the business leaders with the group also met separately with a number of business leaders there, including potential distributors for their goods.
